Indications/Uses
Septicemia, bone & joint infections, gm -ve pneumonia, skin & soft tissue infections, including burn wound infections; community-acquired pneumonias; meningitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent 750 mg-1.5 g IM/IV 8 hrly. Uncomplicated gonococcal infections 1.5 g IM divided into 2 doses & administered at 2 separate sites & 1 g of probenecid orally, administered simultaneously as single dose. Meningitis, bacteria Up to 3 g IV 8 hrly. Pre-op prophylaxis open-heart surgical patients 1.5 g IV ½-1 hr prior to surgery; 750 mg IV/IM 8 hrly if the surgery is prolonged for up to 24 hr. Childn & infant ≥3 mth 16.7-33.3 mg/kg IM/IV 8 hrly. Neonate 10-33.3 mg/kg IM/IV 8 hrly, or 15-50 mg/kg 12 hrly. Bone infections 50 mg/kg IV 8 hrly meningitis. Bacteria (neonates) 33.3 mg/kg IV 12 hrly or 50 mg/kg IV 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to penicillins, penicillin derivatives, penicillamine or cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Allergic reaction to cephamycin, cephalosporins, penicillins, penicillin-derivatives or other β-lactams. Long-term use may cause oral candidiasis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity, pseudomembranous colitis, allergic reactions, hypoprothrombinemia, oral candidiasis, seizures, GI & serum sickness-like reactions, vaginitis, thrombophlebitis.
Drug Interactions
Lower estrogen reabsorption & reduced efficacy of combined OCs. False -ve w/ ferricyanide test.
